POT BEING STIRRED FOR A NEW OUTBREAK OF CONFLICT BETWEEN RUSSIA AND GEORGIA. (Global Research)

(Reuters: Gleb Garanich)

As Georgia continues its bid to become a member of NATO, it looks again to the “threat” of a secessionist minority within its borders and the U.S. is apparently poised to repeat its earlier act of military support for an attack on a would-be secession supported by Russia as occurred in the 2008 invasion of South Ossetia. This may suit the U.S. geopolitical goal of keeping a rival Russia tied down in conflicts with U.S. client surrogates like the country of Georgia, as Bush’s proxy war against Russia becomes Obama’s proxy war.

IF A COUNTRY DELAYS LONG ENOUGH ITS RECOVERY FROM A DISASTER, WHAT WILL IT GET? PERHAPS THE RETURN OF A DEPOSED DICTATOR. (Miami Herald)

At least in Haiti that may be the case, as Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, in exile in France since 1986, unexpectedly lands in Port Au Prince, as the furor over recent elections continues. Duvalier says he came to “help Haiti” and many local people apparently are hoping for his return to power.

Illinois (Pat Quinn) and Minnesota (Mark Dayton, with two new Democratic governors, are exceptions to this mindset, as both Quinn and Dayton show determination to maintain essential public services and to use progressive taxation to pay the bills.

Despite early reservations about the effect of “health care reform” on industry profits, those in the business now seem more disposed to welcome the increased profits derived from the mandated increase in people with insurance coverage and the tepid “regulations” on their operations that are materializing as the “reforms” begin to take substance in economic realities.

EVERGLADES RESTORATION? GRAND DESIGN HAS DETERIORATED INTO THE USUAL FITS AND STARTS INCREMENTALISM. (Sarasota Herald-Tribune)

Departed Florida Governor Crist’s ambitious plan to accelerate restoration by massive land-buying deal with U.S. Sugar to convert Everglades land into conserved land fell through with the current recession. A paltry new purchase of some land north of Lake Okeechobee demonstrates the distance fallen between those “dreams” and the economic/political realities as U.S.S. continues its stranglehold on policy with respect to the region.
