A fundamentalist church in Miami, Trinity Church, features a program of rigorous fasting for young people, about 1000 of whom assembled at a concert/service. While their pastor urges on these fasts as a means of ensuring their salvation, critics warn that the austerity of their eating and drinking creates health hazards like that of a young man who recently collapsed at a local run marathon.

This is the way Pepe Escobar sees developments in the Egyptian “revolution.” The “two-faced” policy of the U.S. regarding support or opposition to the people’s revolution is really a well-orchestrated plan to counter the real fear in U.S. policy-making: not the fear of Arab terrorism to create new 9/11s but the fear of a rise in Arab nationalism that would upset the applecart of Israeli/U.S. domination in the Middle East. Frank Wisner and other counter-revolutionary agents are busily “arranging” a settlement that will quash popular Arab nationalism by installing an even stronger military dictatorship as the already-declining Mubarak is being “deposed.”

New studies by Board of Regents for state university belies the boastful claims of state leaders that there are very high graduation rates for students who enter the state’s high schools. While 77% of them do graduate, the new study shows that only 23% of those graduates are prepared for college or any kind of work that could be regarded as a “career.” The study could be a wake up call for genuine reforms that go beyond the cosmetic ones embodied in current state education “policy.”

Ecologist George Wuerther describes the situation in which bison, having roamed in search of forage in a harsh Wyoming winter, they are regarded as a disease infection problem for local cattle are slaughtered at the expense not of the cattle growers whose livelihoods are affected, but by U.S. taxpayers. If the growers were truly serious about disease control, they would demand such treatment of local elk but they do not do so, because elk herds are protected for politically powerful hunters and hunting outfitters and because elk do not present the same threat of serious competition for control of cattle pasture lands.

European business operators are taking advantage of weak labor laws and overall lack of unionization of workers to locate their industries in the U.S.A. Having established their businesses, they proceed in the American Way of making assaults on U.S. workers, demanding pay cuts and losses of benefits as alternatives to withdrawing the much-coveted jobs that their operations have “created” or “saved.” Two such examples are cited: a French company that takes over a starch-manufacturing plant in Keokuk, Iowa, a German one which takes over the Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C. The mob called such threats against those not cooperating with their criminal enterprises “leveraging”; the industrialists might as well use the same word
