IS THE STUXNET WORM TODAY’S EQUIVALENT OF THOSE ELUSIVE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION?

The fable of Iraq’s WMD possession is echoed in another likely hoax perpetrated by U.S. government agencies and a compliant mainstream press. The New York Times in particular took the “bait” offered by a much-hyped report that U.S. and Israeli use of an internet virus had successfully set back Iran’s nuclear development program by a number of years. Rehmat Qadir writes critically on this, noting that the program has actually clipped on at an accelerating pace, and suggests the Stuxnet claim is a face-saving maneuver for the U.S. and Israel to “declare victory” on another front of the war on terrorism after they have apparently stood down from earlier plans to confront Iran more directly on its nuclear weapons program.

M.J. Rosenberg, columnist for Al-Jazeera, notes that Israel cannot simply ignore those Palestinian claims and withdraw from the West Bank as it did from Gaza. Such action would only create another spate of violence that Israel would be compelled to put down with violence. There is simply no way to peace in the region, thinks Rosenberg, unless Israel is prepared to treat its Arab population as citizens and not as colonial subjects.

Glen Ford, using Detroit and New Orleans as examples, describes how American cities are being “emptied out” of their black populations as conditions therein become increasingly intolerable for them. In terms reminiscent of the “attrition through enforcement” that is designed to make life too uncomfortable for undocumented immigrants, the education “policy” of the white power elite is detemined to transform cities into the bastians of white privilege they desire, attacking the public schools to be replaced with charter ones, closing public schools and doubling class size in those remaining. The spectacular success of these tactics is shown in rapid flight of black people from both Detroit and New Orleans.

TEXAS: STEALING FROM A PROGRAM TO PREVENT AUTO THEFT TO PAY THE STATE’S OTHER BILLS.

State legislature considering measure that would scuttle the state’s program which has been credited with cutting auto thefts in half. It is funded by a special fee in auto insurance renewals that would remain in force even as the program is eliminated. Sound like raids on pension funds to cover general revenue shortfalls?

Residents of this “space coast” community, until the 1960s, had been enjoying a sustainable economy based on harvests from nearby ocean. That was then, this is now, and “now” is the situation in which a small town, which congratulated itself on “landing” a major launch facility for NASA space mission, enjoyed nearly a half-century of boom only to be falling into drastic decline as this mission is about to be ended and only the large crowds expected to attend “historic” last-launches can provide enough tourist business to keep the town going at all.
