AMERICAN TREATMENT OF HAITI: THE OLD IMPERIALISM WITH A NEW BLACK FACE.
(Black Agenda Report)
A year after the earthquake, with Haiti still in a state of devastation, Jemina Pierre so characterizes U.S. policy today: a continuation of the old ways of imperial domination. While President Obama proposed immediate massive relief, what happened immediately was a massive assertion of U.S. military presence, seen as an opportunity to counter Venezuelan influence in the region; and what happened over the long haul was very little actual humanitarian relief but a policy of interdiction of Haitians attempting to flee to America and deportations for those who succeeded in arriving illegally. In naming the last two Presidents as organizers of Haitian recovery, Obama ensured that the political and economic policies of the past would remain today.

CIVIL STRIFE IN LIBYA HAS RIPPLE EFFECT ON ECONOMY OF NEIGHBORING COUNTRY OF NIGER.
(BBC News)
For years, impoverished residents of Niger have sought work in the more prosperous Libya to the north. Now, thousands of them are among the 200,000 “foreign nationals” who have fled Libya and the government of Niger calls for international assistance as many families in the country lose their support from payments of family members working in Libya.

ISSUE OF MERGER OF “HISTORICALLY” BLACK AND WHITE COLLEGES BUBBLES UP IN LOUISIANA.
(Chicago Defender)
Governor Bobby Jindal is proposing the merger of the two universities of New Orleans in the city. Critics charge that it’s yet another assault on higher education for black Americans, as racial discrimination in the “white” version of the city’s university promises to create even more disadvantage to blacks, both as students and as faculties. The same issue has arisen in Georgia and other southern states.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ARE AN “OVER-PROVISION” FOR BLACKS IN ALAMEDA COUNTY CA, BUT THEY ARE NOT MORE MENTALLY HEALTHY THAN WHITES.
(Peersnet)
This is the conclusion of a large medical utilization study in the county, suggesting that the way these services are “delivered” is not culturally sensitive enough to have the most favorable mental health outcomes for those in the African American community.

WALL STREET’S ASSAULT ON BLACK COMMUNITIES HITS HARD IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN.
(Black Agenda Report)
Glen Ford describes an emerging form of “fascist” domination by finance capitalism as “emergency financial” laws are allowing the state to wrest control of local affairs from local people when their local financing is deemed as failing. By “coincidence,” the place in Michigan where this law has been most extremely enforced is the majority-black city of Benton Harbor. Another “black” city, Detroit, may be facing the same fate.

Quote of the day…
The “crisis” that justifies the outright abolition of democracy – beginning, of course, in Black America – is the crisis afflicting finance capitalism. Wall Street then imposes instant emergencies on the larger society by starving cities and schools and the public sector in general, in order to strip down, privatize and commodify every asset in sight. Michigan’s fascist model will doubtless be duplicated across the nation, as Wall Street moves to rule directly, through its emergency managers, by one name or another. The permanent emergency has begun.
Glen Ford, predicting the extension of “emergency” take-overs of local governments from Michigan to the country
