Sputtering plans for the “redevelopment” of the center of the Katrina devastation in New Orleans are getting a new lease on life with plans to reconstruct the abandoned buildings of the Holy Cross school, plans which include still-lingering plans for affordable housing and multi-use community centers. The grocery store plan is said to be inspired by Michelle Obama’s call to bring such facilities of the “food deserts” of the country.

I don’t think the implications of this have been fully thought through or accepted yet. What we have here is the result of decades of growing divisions and marginalization, but austerity will almost certainly make it worse.
