The administration building of Holy Cross School (Michael DeMocker, The Times-Picayune)

IMAGINE THAT, A FULL SERVICE GROCERY STORY RIGHT HERE IN THE LOWER 9TH WARD!

(New Orleans Times-Picayune)

Sputtering plans for the “redevelopment” of the center of the Katrina devastation in New Orleans are getting a new lease on life with plans to reconstruct the abandoned buildings of the Holy Cross school, plans which include still-lingering plans for affordable housing and multi-use community centers. The grocery store plan is said to be inspired by Michelle Obama’s call to bring such facilities of the “food deserts” of the country.

WHAT IF RACIAL VIOLENCE OF THE TYPE THAT HAS SWEPT ACROSS ENGLAND HAD HAPPENED IN THE U.S.?

(Black Agenda Report)

Glen Ford speculates on this question, noting that while racial discrimination against African Caribbean populations is perhaps as intense in Britain as in the U.S., the relatively “mild” police response is not in the same league with that unleashed in such episodes as the riots in south central Los Angeles. When Margaret Thatcher said “the way we police in Britain is through consent of communities,” she expressed a profound difference with the U.S. where respect for minority communities is a rare commodity indeed

SHELL OIL: IF WE SPILL OIL IN ARCTIC OPERATIONS, WE CAN CLEAN IT UP.

(Rolling Stone)

The company makes this “fantastic” claim as the moratorium on Arctic oil drilling, established after the BP oil spill last year in the Gulf of Mexico, seems about to end as drilling in the “far more dangerous” Arctic atmosphere moves toward being activated. The “fantasy” is that in the “worst scenario” of an oil spill, 90% of the oil could be recovered within 43 days, something that BP didn’t come close to accomplishing.

THE PENTAGON CAN’T SURVIVE WITH THE CUTS THAT WOULD OCCUR AUTOMATICALLY UNDER THE NEW “BUDGET DEAL.

(Counterpunch)

In fact, says military anlaysis Winston Wheeler, those Pentagon supporters crying out with a “doomsday scenario” over those cuts ignore the fact that the U.S. military establishment cannot survive even with MORE money throw into a thoroughly decayed and dysfunctional structure. Wheeler anticipates the need for many military hawks to keep plenty of paper bags handy for their hyper-ventilating over anticipated military budget cuts.

“WILL WORK FOR FOOD.

(Palm Beach Post)

Signs like this may become more common on the streets of Palm Beach County FL towns after a second day-labor center is closed, as a Pentecostal church that maintained it decides it can no longer bear the expense. While “work for food” signage is illegal in the county, officials admit that the unemployed may have little alternative as day labor centers close.

Quote of the day…

I don’t think the implications of this have been fully thought through or accepted yet. What we have here is the result of decades of growing divisions and marginalization, but austerity will almost certainly make it worse. Yes, the police can restore control with massive force but that is not sustainable either in the long term. You have to accept that this may happen again.
