This is the spectre raised by Mike Whitney as he comments on the little-publicized appointment of Mario Draghi, former Managing Director of GS, to become the head of the European Central Bank, the European equivalent of the U.S. Federal Reserve. Off his record at GS, Draghi may be expected to push even more aggressively than his predecessor the neo-liberal agenda of cutting interest rates and demanding from European national economies those “structural adjustments” of conversion of public facilities to private ones, discouraging unions and demanding reductions in public services including cuts in pension payments.

President Obama invokes a law forbidding U.S. treasury contributions to any UN agency offering membership to Palestine and withholds U.S. contributions to UNESCO that amount to 22% of the contributions to that agency, which has been active in humanitarian relief in Gaza. As Israel plans “reprisals” against Palestinians for the UNESCO action, the Israeli lobby in the U.S. flexes its well-exercised muscle.

This new/old conundrum didn’t expire with Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas; nor with a popular David Mamet play, Oleanna. Now the “rising star” among GOP candidates for President, Herman Cain, may see his star fall not because of his super-conservative views, but because of alleged incidents of harassment in his background. Cain admits that he had made a couple of “settlements” to women charging harassment, but these incidents were as benign as, while at a restaurateur meeting while he was the CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, telling a woman she must be 5 feet tall, because she like his wife “came up to his chin:”; and another in which he just put his arm around a woman. Mamet portrayed a more dramatic “settlement” of harassment charges.

The nurse, following what she says is “hospital policy,” refused to allow police to enter the room of a patient accused of assaulting another patient. As police try to arrest the nurse for refusal to cooperate with law enforcement, she is tasered and carried off the jail along with the accused patient. She spent the night in jail before being released to her family. Video accompanies narrative.

Florida Governor Rick Scott announces a “deal” whereby a portion of now-closed Space Coast NASA facilities will be transferred to a private space agency which will in turn make contracts with Boeing for what will amount to a taxi service for astronauts to and from the space shuttle. True, it will cost the state $50 million to support the project (about $100,000 per job), but it will make a huge dent in the county’s currently unemployed list of about 31,000 workers.

I wonder what would happen to the IMF, BIS and World Bank if we abolished the federal reserve system. In other words, how the hell do we change this? The elite bankers run the place, and the place is now the world. Either an international left wing movement or a movement against the world financial systems, either way it looks like the revolution must go global.
