The World Food Programme is attempting to address the situation in a recent addition to African scenes of humanitarian crisis; but the help is slow in being delivered and there is a recognition that attention must be paid not only to the refugees in the south but to the destruction of lives and infrastructure in the north.

An article in Nation magazine describes the brutal ascendancy of a military coup which the U.S. first encouraged in 2009 with faint criticism but then came to embrace the regime with vital financial and technical assistance. Under the guise of assistance to the goverment of Honduras in its “war on drugs” the U.S. has reverted to the “death squad” era of the Reagan administration: helping to prop up a system of rampant corruption in which officials from the cop on the beat to the pooh-bah in the palace are themselves major drug dealers.

Pepe Escobar casts a skeptic eye at plans of movie director Kathryn Bigelow to follow up on her Hurt Lockerapologia for the Iraq war with yet another “action-thriller” featuring the spine-tingling operation that killed Osama bin Laden. Her research for the movie has given her unheard of access to the files of the C.I.A. and the Pentagon. The chief action figure of the operation will apparently be President Barack Obama. Did we mention that the movie is slated to be released in mid-October—just in time to help burnish the warrior credentials of Obama?

The local pizzeria served free slices for the tens of thousands of demonstrations a year ago against the anti-union policies of Governor Scott Walker. Now the same demonstrators cry “we’re b-a-a-c-k”! and Ian’s is once again serving them up to hungry protestors who demand not only a roll-back of those policies but also the recall of the Governor himself.
