IS IT 2005 AGAIN? LIBYA HOLDS “FIRST DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS IN A HALF CENTURY”—AND THE WORLD’S CORPORATE MEDIA ARE RIGHT THERE TO CHEER AGAIN.

)Dissident Voices)

UK watchdog group Media Lens notes that, as Yogi Berra infamously said, “it’s deja vu all over again” as Libya holds a “democratic election” in which virtually none of the conditions—like public order and viable opposition parties–of truly democratic elections have been fulfilled. Rather, as in the Iraqi “first in 50 years” election of 2005, these media—which had supported the overthrowing of Saddam Hussein that led to these elections—provide justification for their support for military removal of a “dictator” by calling “demonstration elections” truly democratic ones. Any bets on the next “milestone” election as the Syrian regime begins to “topple” under foreign-encouraged assaults?

Mary Ellen Connell international law expert at University of Notre Dame, commenting on a lawsuit against U.S. government for drone killings in Yemen in which U.S. citizen bystanders were killed in “kill list” targets of alleged terrorists.
