WHAT DO SAUDI ARABIA, BAHRAIN AND QATAR HAVE IN COMMON?
First, they are “monarchical regimes” within which are found some of the most barbaric labor practices in the world, often featuring immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa. Second, they are the closest of allies of the United States in its determined policy in fomenting insurrection in a “humanitarian intervention” to depose the ruler of Syria.

MONROE SHEEP IN OBAMA CLOTHING: U.S. POLICY IN LATIN AMERICA.
Conn Hallinan remembers the 1823 declaration of James Monroe intending to maintain U.S. dominance throughout the western hemisphere. Twentieth century “death squad” participation in Latin American countries has (mostly) been replaced by the militarization of countries in the area, with a string of U.S. bases across the face of the region, the tolerance for anti-government “coups,” support of futile “drug wars” and the advancement of free trade agreements that tend to impoverish people everywhere south of the Rio Grand River. Hallinan recalls the statement of an earlier Mexican leader who said the country is “too far from God” and “too near to the United States.”

HOW ARE THINGS IN OLD BED-STUY? REALLY F***ED UP, SAYS YUSUF NURUDDIN.
The Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn was once the second largest black ghetto in America (after the one in Chicago) but things they certainly are a-changing there, as the community has gone through two rounds of “gentrification.” First a class of upperly mobile blacks (Buppies) began to displace the working class people and establishments in the area. More recently, real estate dealers have begun to sell Bed-Stuy properties to affluent whites with the means to move in and “renovate” the area. Nuruddin says make no mistake about it, this is not “integration” but an invasion by whites of a black enclave.

NEW ORLEANS IS BACK! LIKE, CAN’T YOU TAKE A RIDE ON A BRAND NEW STREET CAR LINE FROM BOURBON STREET TO THE SUPERDOME?
New Orleans leading are touting the city’s hosting of the February 3 Super-Bowl as proof of how the city has finally recovered from the ravages of Katrina. Out in the lower 9th Ward, however, things are very different. “Infrastructure” repair (like passable roads) has hardly been even started and “Make It Right” houses built by Brad Pitt charities remain largely unoccupied.

YOUTH FOOTBALL IN SOUTH FLORIDA BEING PLAYED UNDER A CLOUD OF TERROR FROM THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.
Drive-by shootings and arrests of adults for conducting gambling operations involving youth football teams as well as concussions and other football injuries are leaving many south Floridians wondering about the viability of the “frenzy” for the sport among people in the area.

Quote of the day…
I can’t imagine a senator from a red state, especially one in which there are more guns per household than the national average, wanting to go up against a barrage from pro-gun forces. Political analyst
Harry Enten, cited in article about Democratic senators opposing gun control laws.
