Legality of abortions; whether a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion can be exercised in consideration of harassments of pro-life activists as well as efforts in state legislatures to raise impediments like parental notification to a woman’s exercise of that right.

FEELING THE PAIN: NEW NEBRASKA ANTI-ABORTION LAW MAY DIRECTLY CHALLENGE ROE V. WADE. The law will ban abortion in any situation in which the fetus allegedly "feels pain," a departure from the standard of the Court decision which makes the capacity of a fetus to survive outside the womb the basis of excluding abortion. As well, the law requires extensive "mental health" counseling of women before opting for an abortion during the 20 weeks of a pregnancy that a fetus is deemed as incapable of feeling pain.

BARACK OBAMA OWES PRO-CHOICE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS BIG TIME: WILL HE PAY OFF? Katha Pollitt, columnist for The Nation, notes that the health care reform bill would not have passed the House without the votes of several pro-choice members who said they would not vote for it if it contained provisions against insurance coverge for abortion procedures. They voted for it anyway to preserve the bill's intention to extend coverage to millions of people, and Pollitt says Obama and the Democratic Party "owe" the pro-choice and broader feminist movement a more forthright movement on several issues of special interest to this constituency.

2/8/10

TIM TEBOW AIRS "ANTI-ABORTION" AD AT SUPER BOWL, AND THE WORLD DOESN'T STOP TURNING. In a tamer-than-expected commercial much protested in advance by pro-choice advocates, the football star's mother mumbles some words about what a great kid Tim was, is tackled by him and gently chided for interrupting her trying to tell "our story." If you blinked, you missed the political "message" (commercial footage included with this link.)

2/8/10

MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE ALLENTOWN WOMEN'S CENTER. PBS NOW goes to a Pennsylvania abortion center to provide focus on a piece featuring the question of whether the Democratic Party has "abandoned" the pro-choice movement in the process of pandering to pro-life sentiment in order to gain control of Congress. The difficulties of women hoping to avail themselves of their constitutional right to an abortion----at Allentown and around the country---are featured as women are shown having to brave protesters at clinics and, in some states, having to view sonograms of their fetuses just prior to their abortions. NOW interviews both Bart Stupak, sponsor of House amendment to forbid some abortion coverage under health care reform and Howard Dean, former Democratic Party chair and "architect" of the Democrats' takeover of Congress in 2008. Both admit that the party has opened its "umbrella" to attract pro-life voters.

2/1/10

WHAT IF TIM TEBOW'S MOTHER HAD DECIDED TO ABORT HIM? A 30-second commercial to be aired at the Super Bowl re-ignites the national "debate" over abortion. Mrs. Tebow's "story" is that she decided to go through with a difficult pregnancy, a choice that resulted in the football star coming into the world. The "story" puts into a half-minute capsule the ongoing controversy that features a woman's right to reproductive decisions on the one hand, the inestimable loss associated with abortion on the other. (What if Gandhi's mother had "chosen" to abort him? Or what if Hitler's mother had made the same choice?) The controversy also highlights the issue of media bias: why did CBS choose to air this commercial and reject as "too political" another favoring gay marriage?

1/21/10

Women's pro-choice groups ask CBS to withhold Super Bowl commercial featuring University of Florida football star Tim Tebow, which they say promotes an anti-abortion agenda

1/7/10

NOW ISN'T THAT PRECIOUS? Recent popular film of that title, which features a black teenager giving birth to a second child by rape from her father, sends black pro-choice activist Sikivu Hutchinson into a lamentation on the prejudice against women's choices to have abortions, a prejudice found in both the fundamentalism of the white religious right and the "morality police" prominent among black leaders. Most acutely today, this has been reflected in the willingness of black members of Congress and presumbly a black President to accept a rider in health care coverage that signficantly restricts coverage for abortion, a measure that will create further disadvantage for black Americans who are already suffering the effects of large numbers of unplanned children.

BEN NELSON IN THE SENATE DOES A BART STUPAK IMITATION. The Stupak amendment, introduced by the Michigan congressman and passed in the House version of a health care reform bill, is replicated in the Nebraskan's amendment in the Senate which would deprive health care funding for abortion services. As in the House, this action may be deemed necessary to obtain the "blue dog" Democrat support without which the health care reform bill would not pass.

11/30/09

In Alaska, opponents are challenging in court the effort to get an inititiative for voter approval that would define fetuses as "legal persons" and make abortion illegal.

11/13/09

"TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM." Katha Pollitt of Nation Magazine comments bitterly on the expectation of pro-choicers, who worked so hard for the election of President Obama and a Democratic Congress, should meekly accept that a ban on health care funding for abortion services is the "price" that had to be paid for the passage of a health care "reform" measure. It seems to her that male-oriented constituencies like the leadership of the Catholic Church are seldom called on to put aside their personal agendas in the interest of "winning one for the team."

11/12/09

NO EASY WAY OUT FOR DEMOCRATS ON ABORTION RIGHTS. President Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress are finding it difficult to follow their accustomed pattern of "triangulating" between the strong emotional forces of anti-abortion and pro-choice advocates. With intrusion into the health care reform bill of provisions limiting insurance coverage related to abortion procedures, Democrats are being forced, for once, to come down clearly on one side or another of that issue

11/10/09

PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS GET READY TO BE THE MOUSE THAT ROARS AGAIN ON HEALTH CARE REFORM. Many of the Progressive Caucus vowed to vote against a health care reform bill without a "robust" public option, but in the end all but two of them (Kucinich and Massa) voted for the bill though it lacked that feature. Now, as it appears that the Senate will attach an amendment to the bill restricting coverage for abortion procedures, a number of feminist representatives, who voted for the bill passed in the House, say they will vote against the measure if it comes back from a House/Senate reconciling committee with the abortion restrictions. The House measure originally having passed by only 5 votes, any serious defection could kill the bill. The mouse could certainly roar with tremendous effect. Will it?

11/8/09

ON THE ABORTION ISSUE, BLUE DOG DEMOCRATS BARKED LOUDLY ON THE HEALTH CARE LEGISLATION PASSED BY THE HOUSE. Conservative Democrats' insisted on a provision barring insurance coverage for abortions in any government-subsidized insurance. Liberals threatened to vote against the whole bill if it contained that provision. In the end the end the blue dogs prevailed and most liberals swallowed and voted for the bill.

The American obsessive fear of terrorism: Unless its the terrorism carried out against clients and doctors at abortion clinics.: : . The lack of public outrage or official action that one sees in any broken-up "plot" of terrorists to bomb  public buildings (even ones than are "aspirational" and not "operational") is contrasted with the tepid media and public reaction to the very "operational" act of terrorism that murdered a Wichita doctor and closed his abortion clinic.  The head of the pro-life movement, Troy Newman, expresses "regret" of the incident, not out of sympathy with the victim but out of concern that the incident was a "PR disaster" for the movement.

"WHY DID A PRO-CHOICE PRESIDENT APPOINT SOMEONE TO HHS WHO IS AGAINST ABORTION AND CONTRACEPTION?"  This question is raised by Francis Kissling, former head of Catholics for Choice, responding to President Obama's appointment of Alexia Kelley to head the "faith-based initiatives" office of the Department of Health and Human Services.  Kelley leads a Catholic Alliance group, which has supported the stand of the church on abortion and contraception, and focussed its efforts on trying to improve living conditions for the mothers of infant children.  Pro-choice advocates are "puzzled" by the appointment, while Kissling suggests it is political "payback" to both Catholics and evangelicals who helped insure Obama's presidential win by giving him "cover" that would allow pro-life people to vote for him.

No worlds left to conquer.  Anti-abortion protesters in Wichita, Kansas have an "Alexander the Great" moment as the murder of abortion doctor George Stiller results in closing of last of four abortion clinics that had operated in the city, allowing some anti-abortion leaders to "weep" that there is little reason for them to continue to operate in Wichita.

Planned Parenthood sticks with Barack Obama as he backs off campaign promise to sign anti-abortion bill as first act as president: This promise in 2007 campaign speech to PP is effectively buried as he says in his "100 days" press conference that such action is not part of his "legislative priority" but instead he wants to focus on reducing the rate of unwanted pregnancy and, as a "pro-choice" advocate, wants women themselves and not government entities to make choices about their reproductive activity.  Planned Parenthood, for its part, congratulates Obama for his "leadership" on "women's health concerns" during the 100 days.  (As true pro-choice Justice Souter announces retirement intention, look for an early indication of how Obama's revisionist definition of "choice" will play out on his first Court nominee.)

South Dakota voters turn down a ban on almost all abortions:. By 55-45% vote, a measure is defeated that would ban abortion absent a few granted "exceptions" that pro-choice opponents of the measure say would provide too much leeway to doctors in deciding whether a pregnant woman was entitled to an exception.

Just in time for the November election, guns, gays and abortion are appearing again on state ballots.  A South Dakota preacher ordains himself as the instrument of God to overturn Roe v. Wade, and here, as in Colorado, voters will be urged to troop to the polls to approve draconian anti-abortion measures and "incidentally" to vote for the GOP presidential ticket.  You know the drill: the measures might or might not pass, but the GOP wins and political leaders "forget about" abortion and other wedge issues until the next election rolls around.

Abortion becoming more of an issue (sort of) in the Pennsylvania presidential primary:.  With Obama and Clinton both considered pro-choice in their records and advocacy, abortion would not seem to be an issue between them.  But, in a campaign, candidates will "find a way" and that way is indicated in Pennsylvania as two conservative Democratic leaders endorse Obama, arguing as he does himself, that he will be the better candidate to "de-fuse" the rhetoric of the debate. This may help Obama's support among working class people, among whom pro-choice tends to be a less popular position. (The author might have added that, with the substantial cross-voting of Republicans in the Democratic primary, Obama may draw more votes as well from anti-abortion leaning Republicans, perhaps neutralizing the "Limbaugh effect" of Republicans voting for Clinton to prolong the agony of a Democratic contest.)

New weapon being developed in arsenal of anti-abortionists:.  The weapon was first launched when  sympathy began to displace from the "murdered" fetus to the supposedly negative effects of abortion on women's psychological health: a Post-Abortion Syndrome (PAS)  of mental symptoms. In recent years, focus has shifted toward men who are "victims" of grief and guilt resulting from their wives' or girlfriends' decisions to abort.  The group counseling sessions that bring out these PAS emotions are compared to the "repressed memories" of childhood sexual abuse recovered during counseling.  To show how far this grief and victim mongering can be developed, even siblings of aborted fetuses are now being seen as suffering psychological damage from their mothers' decisions to abort.  So it's pity the woman, pity the man, pity the siblings, hell, pity everybody because the guilt can be spread all around. Who needs the Bible to condemn abortion as murder, when there are so many pseudo-Freudians to condemn it as inhumane to its survivors?

Ellen Goodman sees the movie "Juno" and lets loose her inner "fuddy duddy.": .  She sees the movie in a theatre full of "tween" girls and worries about the message of these and others of the recent spate of teen-age pregnancy "comedies."  As Molly on Fibber McGee and Molly (or any other fuddy duddy) might say, "taint funny, McGee."  Not funny, that is, that there is a rising rate of teenage pregnancy in the country and a massive confusion from both pro-life and pro-choice advocates about what are "correct" decisions when it comes to sex, contraception and abortion. Pro-choice people don't want to condemn single mothers who have disdained both contraception and abortion, and pro-life ones applaud the courage of a woman who gives birth rather than "murdering" the fetus even though the woman has violated the "abstinence-only" prong of the pro-life agenda.  With this cultural confusion, abetted by Hollywood comedies, fuddy duddy Goodman wonders how parents can have "serious" discussions with their pregnant teen-age daughters
